Our Story

At Neighbourhood Watch NT, our story begins with a simple idea — safer communities through connected people.

In the 1980s, there was a strong call for a Neighbourhood Watch program to be established locally. Territorians wanted safer streets, stronger community ties, and a way to work alongside police to prevent crime before it happened.

NHWNT has grown from a small grassroots initiative into a Territory-wide movement, uniting everyday Territorians with the shared purpose of reducing crime and building stronger, safer neighbourhoods. With strong volunteer support and close collaboration with NT Police, we delivered programs, community events, and large-scale initiatives right across the NT.

Many Territorians will remember the Neighbourhood Watch street signs, community barbecues, Safety House program, Operation Identification campaigns, Business Watch initiatives — and even Blue Light discos that brought young people together in safe, supervised spaces.

Our Evolution

While the scale of Neighbourhood Watch NT has changed over time, our purpose has not. Today, we operate on a smaller scale — lean, focused, and community-driven — but our core foundations remain exactly the same: education and connection.

Over the years we have adapted to changing times, new challenges, and evolving technology. Crime prevention today looks different to what it did in the 80s or early 2000s — and so do we. NHWNT now delivers a range of modern programs, resources, and initiatives designed to support the safety of Territorians. From practical home and personal safety education, to workshops, youth initiatives, online resources, and community safety campaigns — our work continues to evolve while staying grounded in prevention, awareness, and connection.

You’ll see us frequently at events across the Northern Territory — at expos, markets, school events, community days, safety workshops and local gatherings. We remain visible, approachable, and committed to being part of the communities we serve.
