Getting to know the people around you can improve wellbeing and help build safer, more connected neighbourhoods.
Creating safer streets through simple neighbourly connection
The Hey There Neighbour Campaign is a simple initiative designed to encourage stronger connections between neighbours and help build safer, more supportive communities. Something as small as saying hello, introducing yourself, or checking in on the people who live around you can help create a greater sense of belonging and awareness within a neighbourhood. When neighbours know and look out for one another, it naturally helps deter opportunistic crime and strengthens community wellbeing.
Through this campaign, Neighbourhood Watch NT encourages Territorians to take small steps to connect with those around them — whether that’s a friendly wave, a quick chat over the fence, or sharing contact details with trusted neighbours. Building positive relationships within our streets and communities helps foster trust, improves communication and creates a stronger network of people who care about the safety and wellbeing of their neighbourhood.
The benefits of community connection
Stronger sense of belonging
Connecting with the people who live around you helps create a greater sense of belonging within your neighbourhood. Even small interactions, like saying hello or having a quick chat, can help reduce feelings of isolation and build a stronger sense of community. When people feel connected to their neighbourhood, they are more likely to look out for one another and take pride in where they live.
Supporting wellbeing
Positive neighbourly connections can have a meaningful impact on wellbeing. Knowing there are familiar faces nearby can provide reassurance, support and a sense of security in day-to-day life. Simple gestures — like checking in, sharing information or offering help when needed — can help build supportive networks that strengthen the overall wellbeing of a community.
Helping prevent crime
Community connection also plays an important role in crime prevention. When neighbours know each other and are familiar with who belongs in the area, it becomes easier to notice unusual activity and look out for one another. Something as simple as keeping an eye on a neighbour’s home, collecting mail while they are away or alerting them to suspicious behaviour can help deter opportunistic crime and contribute to a safer neighbourhood.
Introduce yourself with our Hey There Neighbour Cards
As part of the campaign, you can download our Hey There Neighbour cards to help break the ice and introduce yourself to those living nearby. Simply fill in your name and contact details on the card and pop it into your neighbour’s mailbox as a friendly way to say hello. It’s a simple gesture that can help start a conversation, build trust within your street, and create a stronger sense of community connection. Knowing who lives around you makes it easier to look out for one another and helps build safer, more supportive neighbourhoods.
