HOLIDAY SAFETY
DON’T LET THIEVES STEAL YOUR CHRISTMAS
Tis the season to be vigilant. Whether you are staying at home or going away, check out our below tips to keep yourself, your home and your belongings safe this festive season.
We’re Peppermint and Nami the Elf Pup — the Crime Prevention Elves sent straight from the North Pole to help Santa and Neighbourhood Watch NT keep the Territory safe this festive season. While Santa’s checking his list (twice!), we’re helping share simple ways you can stay merry, bright, and crime-free!
Keeping gifts (and homes) safe
Nothing says Christmas like a pile of shiny presents — but remember, they can be tempting for more than just us elves!
Keep gifts and valuables out of sight from windows and doors.
Avoid leaving packaging or boxes outside your home — it advertises what’s inside.
Stop. Look. Lock. — even when you’re home, keep doors and windows secure.
Before heading out, consider leaving a light or TV on or set a timer for lights to turn on and off — it helps your home look lived in.
Don’t hide spare keys under mats or pot plants — burglars know all the common spots!
Trim trees and shrubs near windows or doors so they don’t provide cover for intruders.
Take photos and record serial numbers of valuable items to help recovery in case of theft — and store them securely in the MyVault app, a free tool that keeps digital records of your property safe and accessible.
Staying safe online
Doing your Christmas shopping online this year? Before you dash through your gift list, take a moment to make sure you’re sleighing safely. A little caution can go a long way in protecting your personal details and your hard-earned holiday dollars.
Only buy from reputable sites. Look for a lock icon 🔒 and an address starting with https.
Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, check scamwatch for current scams.
If you suspect a scam, contact your bank immediately and report it. Consider using PayPal for added buyer protection.
Avoid oversharing your personal details or travel plans on social media — burglars love knowing when homes are empty! Check your privacy settings and limit who can see your posts.
A safe night out is a great night out
The festive season brings plenty of opportunities to celebrate — from community events to family get-togethers and nights out with friends. By planning ahead and making smart choices, you can enjoy every moment safely and responsibly.
Take your ID, organise a designated driver, and let someone know your plans.
Keep your bag or wallet zipped and in sight at all times.
When you head out, leave a light or TV on to make it look like someone’s home.
Eat before drinking, stay hydrated, and know your limits.
Never leave your drink unattended or accept drinks from strangers.
Stick with your mates, look out for each other, and avoid conflict situations.
Decoration safety
The festive sparkle shouldn’t come with sparks! As you deck the halls and light up the season, take a few extra moments to make sure your decorations are safe, your wiring is sound, and your celebrations shine without risk.
Use only decorations and lights rated for indoor/outdoor use and check cords for frayed wires.
Keep live Christmas trees well-watered and away from heat sources.
Never leave candles or incense unattended — flameless candles are a great alternative.
Turn off lights and decorations before bed or when leaving home.
Keep wrapping paper and decorations away from open flames or heaters.
Travelling this Christmas?
Even Santa plans ahead for his big trip! Before he sets off across the skies, he double-checks everything is safe and secure — a great reminder for Territorians to do the same before travelling this Christmas.
Lock up all windows and doors — even the less obvious ones like laundry or side entries.
Install motion-sensor lighting outside for extra visibility.
Going away? Fill out the Absentee Advice Form so NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services know who to contact if needed.
Ask a trusted neighbour to collect your mail or use a hold service to prevent it piling up.
Let a neighbour or friend know you’ll be away and give them emergency contact details.
Store outdoor items like bikes and tools out of sight.
Adjust thermostats, unplug non-essential appliances, and secure any flammable materials
Avoid posting about your trip publicly until you’re home again.
Spread a little joy
Christmas can be a lonely time for some, so let’s make kindness part of our safety plan. A simple act of care — a smile, a wave, or a quick check-in — can make a world of difference to someone who might be feeling isolated. Together, we can help make every Territorian feel seen, supported, and part of the community this festive season.
Check in on your neighbours, especially the elderly or those living alone.
Introduce yourself using our friendly “Hey There Neighbour” card — it’s an easy, non-confrontational way to connect.
Share the Christmas spirit — a wave, a smile, or a candy cane in the letterbox can make someone’s day!
Together, we can make sure every Territorian feels safe, connected, and cared for this Christmas.
